In my previous essay, I touched on recent issues, perspectives and developments that Vietnamese people need to know before they venture to the West.|However, I have neglected a very important question: “In general, how do Westerners view and treat Vietnamese and Asian people?”|The good news is that Westerners generally see Asians the same way as everyone else. Because liberal ethics are popular and the individual is upheld, many Western countries believe that everyone should be treated equally and fairly. There are laws in each country that promote and protect this ideal, i.e. in work and also in public life, regardless of gender, family, sex, religion, ethnicity or race. . Importantly, these laws reflect the openness and determination to social justice that have made the West successful and worth visiting or settling in.|But of course, Western society, like any society, does not always live up to its ideals. Although formal or radical cases of segregation are rare, real segregation still exists. In my experience after being in Australia for over 30 years, racist violent attacks are very rare. Therefore, each person who goes abroad, even though he has to worry about personal safety, does not hesitate to do the “Journey to the West” trip.
