Events in the first years of the Temple line have not been clearly defined by history. The most important source of these events was Archbishop Wilhelm’s account of Tyros. But Wilhelm was born around 1130 and so was neither a witness nor a contemporary. Other descriptions are derived from Jacques by Vitry (Bishop of Acre (or Akko) in the 13th century).

In 1119 in Jerusalem, a Champagne knight named Hughues de Payns and several other French knights joined Godefroi de Bouillon to form the Temple Order. At first they took the name of the Poor Knights of Christ, applied the doctrine of St. Augustine and joined the police force to help and protect the pilgrims who came to Jerusalem. King Jerusalem, Baldwin II, allowed them to live right next to the temple of the old King Salomon.
